We are members of the Syro Malabar Catholic community living in San Diego. We trace our faith ancestry to St Thomas the Apostle. We are a Catholic community belonging to the Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago.
St Joseph Syro Malabar Catholic Mission, San Diego was formally established as a mission parish in 2017 after informally gathering as a community for over 20 years.
The Pope is the Supreme Pontiff of the Mission and we are in full communion with Roman Catholic Church.
The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church is a Major Archiepiscopal Church in full communion with the Apostolic See of Rome. The Church is headed by the Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly, Mar George Cardinal Alencherry. It is one of the 23 sui iuris (autonomous) Eastern Catholic Churches in the Catholic communion. It is the second largest Eastern Catholic Church. The Syro-Malabar Church follows the East-Syrian liturgy.
His Holiness Pope John Paul II established St. Thomas SyroMalabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago on March 13, 2001. Mar Jacob Angadiath was appointed as its first bishop, and his Episcopal Ordination was held in Chicago, together with the inauguration of the diocese, on July 1, 2001. The Holy Father, Pope Francis, appointed Mar Joy Alappatt as the next Bishop of the St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Chicago on July 3, 2022.
All of our liturgical celebrations are celebrated at St Michael's Catholic Church in Poway. We are thankful to the St Michaels Catholic parish and the Diocese of San Diego for helping us celebrate our liturgy on the church premises.
